| September 2000 DAVID HAWK’S RETURN TO DOMINANCE by Ethan Boldt If you’re a former bodybuilding champion and have fallen out of shape, the last place you want to show up is the Arnold Classic. But that’s what former Mr. USA, Mr. World and Mr. Universe David Hawk did, and his old pals at the biggest bodybuilding event in the circuit took him to task for it. “Was it 14, or 40 years ago, that you competed here?” “Are those love handles?” “Aren’t you selling beer now?” He laughed but it hurt. Turns out David, 38, suffered such ignominy for the sake of this magazine, Physical. His mission? To demonstrate that anyone can get out of shape, even champion bodybuilders, but that you can get it back with the right combination of training, diet and supplementation. Our “Personal Trainer” columnist and the manager/trainer of World Wrestling Federation star Kurt Angle, he’s putting his knowledge to the test with his own body. David also has nearly 20 years of expereince in sport nutrition products marketing. In addition, he’s recruited his 14-year-old son David Jr. to join him in his quest for a more muscular physique. A perfect time to begin strength training and moderate supplementation, David Jr. was more than ready to bulk up for his sport of wrestling. Perhaps either David or David Jr. reflect a goal of yours—whether that’s to lose fat while gaining muscle, as is the case with David, or to build general size and strength, such as with David Jr. Or you may want to pass on what you learn to a family member or friend. See, for the next five issues, we’re going to track the Hawk boys and see how they effect these changes. We invite you to join them and begin a similar program. By the time David walks back into the Arnold, you can bet he’ll resemble a bodybuilder more than a beer man. And David Jr.’s high school teammates better clear the way for a higher weight class by the start of wrestling season. Where will you be? You’re about to see what the Physical lifestyle entails for September.
