THE COMEBACK DIET

To get back in shape, David follows a diet high in protein and low in fat—about 55% carbohydrates, 35% protein and 10% fat. To also help lose the fat, it was slightly calorie-restricted. He consumes about 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight a day and about 1.4 to 1.5 grams of carbohydrates.

David Jr.’s a different story. A young, wiry teenager, he has full license to eat as much as he wants. “He needs the calories to grow,” says his father. David recommends that he take in about 100 grams of protein per day, much of it in drink form (such as NITRO-Tech whey protein) rather than meat products.. He also makes sure David Jr. drinks a lot of water, often in the form of the palatable-for-teenager Crystal Light, to flush his system because of the protein. Eating every three to four hours, or six to seven times a day, the entire strategy is working—he’s already gained 12 pounds in five weeks. (His strength training and TRAC Creatine also have something to do with this amazing change!)

The right balance between protein and carbohydrates can be tricky. While a heavy person may need more protein and less carbs, someone with more muscle density may necessitate more carbohydrates. “You have to be aware of your energy levels in relation to training. If you don’t have enough, look at your nutritional intake,” advises David, whose meal prior to his strength training is higher in carbs for energy sake. Then afterwards he increases the protein ratio to stabilize the muscle tissue. Some carbs are needed here as well, as you have about a 30-minute window to refill your glycogen stores.

David makes sure to never consume carbs on their own, which spike insulin and increase the body’s rude tendency to store calories as fat. Instead, he mixes in protein. “You need a happy medium to keep the glycemic index in check,” he explains. In addition, keeping to a low glycemic index lengthens your energy and prevents the peaks and valleys.

For example, David adds two to three scoops of NITRO-Tech protein to his morning oatmeal, which is mostly carbohydrate by itself. “The protein also is needed to raise nitrogen levels and help the muscle tissue repair and grow,” he explains. NITRO-Tech is the revolutionary new protein supplement designed by MuscleTech Research and Development Inc. David prefers it because it mixes well with anything and is very digestible. Plus he considers the taste profile to be first-rate no matter what flavor he uses. “I can feel it in my muscles, that they’re getting bigger and harder,” relates David, who also consumes a drink with NITRO-Tech.

Introduced earlier this year, NITRO-Tech is the first-ever whey protein formula containing a specific nitrogen delivery system. Its complexes work together to help amplify the anabolic properties of whey protein by potentially allowing more amino acids to be shuttled into your muscles rather than oxidized by your liver. This entry of amino acids and whey peptides into your muscles leads to more lean mass, strength and improved physical performance.

Clinical and real-world results both show that NITRO-Tech works better than regular whey protein. In one clinical study, one test subject gained 15 pounds of lean body mass and experienced a loss in body fat in only six weeks. And every experienced athlete tested while taking NITRO-Tech has also made significant gains.

Meanwhile, there’s the subject of fat. “I’ve been under the feeling that fat is fat, and will become fat,” admits David, who consequently keeps his intake low, to under 50 grams a day. He always eats “clean” foods, such as lean meat, eggs without the yolks, bread without the butter. Along with the clean theme, David drinks about two gallons of water a day to flush his system and help him lose fat.
